High on Roan!

Experiencing a Roan Mountain Sunset!
Five friends met to experience the continuing saga of watching sunsets from mountain tops, but this time on Roan Mountain. Pictured are James, Greg, Sheila and Chris.
We paused on the first bald, Round Bald, for a photo op. In the distance you can see two other balds: Jane's Bald and Grassy Ridge Bald.
We were privileged to have Sheila's son Greg join us on this trip. He is currently completing his residency and is frequently too busy to enjoy outings.
Sheila was thrilled to have him accompany us on this trek. This fine young man is a former student of mine and I am so very proud of his achievements!
As we continued down the trail toward Jane's Bald, the guys set a brisk pace. James and Greg continued on past Jane's Bald to Grassy Ridge Bald to explore and enjoy the views.
You meet all kinds of interesting people while hiking. A friendly gentleman who was returning to the parking area stopped us to inquire if we would like for him to take our group picture. Awesome! Now, that's one good-looking hiking group!
A moment of solitude in this glorious mountain environment gives one pause to ponder the majesty of God's creation.
Our trusty "trail guide" and trip coordinator!
The sun began to set over Roan Bald before the actual sunset time.
As the sun set, the distant mountains and sky were bathed in rich colors.
After a brief moment of playing "Peek a Boo" with Roan Bald, the sun disappeared.
After sunset, the air became quite chilly and a breeze picked up. We were thankful that we had prepared for the cold night air.

 The colors and shadows deepened.
Yes, Mary Poppins, the hills are alive!
 Celebrate!
No, seriously, it was a spectacular end to a wonderful day.
One last glimpse before heading back down the mountain!
What better way is there to spend an afternoon exploring Roan Mountain with friends and ending the day with a glorious sunset over the mountain?!
