Field Trip to Max Patch

Spontaneous plans are often the most fun! Our family discussion Sunday afternoon led us to plan a field trip to Max Patch. Six grandkids and our daughter participated in our excursion.
A tickling session reinforced the camaraderie.
Our first destination was a lovely waterfall near the horse camp. Being only about 0.25 miles long, the path to the waterfall was a quick, easy walk.
Because of all the rain this past season, the waterfall was full.

Grandkids find any excuse to play in the streams.
We hiked the wide gentle trail to the bald where we decided it was time to eat lunch.
It was a great day for kite flying.
We added an extra length of string to get one of our kites way up high.
Our second kite probably needed extra tail weight in the heavy wind gusts.
We told the kids, "See way down there in the valley? There is a wonderful trail that leads through the woods along the Appalachian Trail and veers off to skirt the foot of the mountain. Let's explore!"
They were all in favor! What completely surprised us were the long patches of snow stretched just below the mound of the bald. Who can resist making snowballs?
Spring was in the air! Mr. and Mrs. Bluebird staked out their house for the season.
Can you blame them? Look at that view!
From the valley floor we could see the extensive snow coverage. I bet the entire area was gorgeous a few days earlier.
At the trail junction sign, the crew was willing to pose for a serious shot.
Their reward was an opportunity to be silly in the second shot!
The lower trail is very pleasant and easy to hike, perfect for the youngest grandchild and the 2 older grandparents.

After the 3.5 mile loop hike, we returned to the starting point: the parking area.
What a gorgeous day to be out hiking and exploring in the mountains!
